WATER

Water is basic part of an ecosystem and it is an important material for life on the Earth. It is also a scarce economic resource with many debates about its value, price and allocation mechanisms. Water has been declared a public good (not only in the Czech Republic) and its administration was commended to state institutions. The economic theories contain much knowledge explaining the causes, but chiefly the implications of the accompanying negative or positive effects of this form of natural resources management. Thus the field of water management is not only the domain of hydrologists or biologists but also for specialists from the fields of economics and social sciences.

In the long term the IEEP researches the institutional, economic and political relations in water management and the influence of these factors on the quality of water administration in the Czech Republic. The floods and damages caused by floods are a significant topic in this context. Large scale flooding has manifested itself in the Czech Republic since 1997. The IEEP is also concerned with analyses of institutional reforms in water management in relation to implementing the Water Framework Directive.
