WASTE

Waste is usually considered as useless things which people like to dispose of. Less commonly it is perceived as a product – a by-product of production and consumption activities – which has its value. The social (not individual) responsibility for waste produced and the public character of waste management services are the main key for understanding why the amount of waste produced is “too big” and why waste treatment is not considered by state policy as “green” or “sustainable”. What motivates waste producers (and consumers as well) to produce just a certain amount of waste? How to change their behaviour?

The IEEP is concerned with the economic and political aspects of waste treatment with an emphasis on a waste producer’s decisions and the waste market forming in the Czech Republic. Among the professional interests of the IEEP are the evaluation of Czech and EU policy in the waste management field and particularly analyses of the effectiveness of the instruments which are supposed to decrease the negative impacts of waste on the environment. Within these activities the IEEP cooperates with many academic institutions and organizations in practice (municipalities, delivery transportation companies, waste processors etc.).
